Amazon renews The Expanse for sixth and final season

Staff Writer

Amazon has renewed The Expanse for a sixth and final season.

The hit science fiction series, produced by Alcon Television Group, follows the disappearance of rich-girl-turned-political-activist Julie Mao, which links the lives of Ceres detective Joe Miller (Thomas Jane), accidental ship captain James Holden (Steven Strait) and U.N. politician Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Amid political tension between Earth, Mars and the Belt, they unravel the single greatest conspiracy of all time.

The show was resurrected by Amazon in 2018, after its surprise cancellation. Season 4 of The Expanse, its first as a global Amazon Original, began a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the UN to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity had been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt.

Season 5 will pick up as the future of The Belt is decided – with Marco Inaros waging Armageddon against the Inners for a lifetime of oppression and injustice. Before that has even arrived on our screens, though, Amazon has given the show an early renewal. The bad news? Season 6 will also be its last.

The show will see the main cast, led by Steven Strait, return, along with showrunner Naren Shankar. Cas Anvar, who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct, will not return.

“From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers,” Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-CEOs and co-Founders of Alcon Television Group and executive producers of The Expanse, said in a statement. “We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”

“The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring The Expanse to the screen is incredible,” said Shankar. “Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on Season 6.”
