Reading time: 8 mins

It won’t be long now until Mrs Maisel returns to Amazon Prime Video, and judging by the first picture from Season 3, her return promises to be as marvellous as ever.

The series, written and directed by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted — the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent—one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy… a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also stars Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband Joel Maisel, Alex Borstein (Family Guy) as Susie Myerson, Golden Globe winner and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s father Abe Weissman, and Marin Hinkle, not to mention new additions Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Stephanie Hsu (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us).

You can expect at least a couple of them to head to Miami in Season 3, with the show filming on location in the area. The photo confirms that Midge will be lounging poolside in the sunshine, joined by Borstein’s Susie. While we don’t yet know a confirmed release date, we do know that Season 3 will comprise eight episodes, the same as its Emmy-winning first season – and with Season 2 receiving 20 Emmy nominations (the second highest for 2019, behind only Game of Thrones), Season 3 looks set to be scoring several awards of its own.

“Amazon’s divine comedy bursts back onto our screens with all the fizz and pop of an Aperol Spritz,” we wrote in our review of Season 2, which premiered last year.

It has since won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for the second year in a row. Now, the series is about to get another Globe winner, with This Is Us star Brown signing on to join the impressive ensemble. He announced the news on Instagram, adding that he was “beyond excited to share some pretty marvelous news”.

Amazon renews The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Season 3

22nd May 2018

Amazon has renewed The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for a third season.

The series, is written and directed by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted — the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner.

Our review of Season 1 hailed it as “utterly magnetic”.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel takes Palladino’s famed repertoire of rapid, oft-flippant dialogue and colourful-yet-organic family drama and blends it with a tapestry of chaotic, cursing, flawed characters to whom you cannot help but be drawn to and elated by,” we wrote.

The comedy, which has already been renewed for a second season, won multiple Golden Globes this year, as well as a Peabody Award. It was while in New York accepting the latter that Palladino revealed the show had been commissioned for a third run. Season 2 is expected to air later this year, while Season 1 is a front-runner going into this year’s Emmys.

Amazon orders two seasons of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

5th May 2017

Amazon has greenlit two seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, following the premiere of its pilot episode last month.

From Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Executive Producer Daniel Palladino (Family Guy), the series stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel. A 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted – the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner – her perfect life takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent, one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy… a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch.

The pickup marks Amazon Studios’ first multi-season greenlight of a new series in its history.

“In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause,” says Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama & VR, Amazon Studios. “Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also stars Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband Joel Maisel, Alex Borstein (Family Guy) as Susie Myerson, Golden Globe winner and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s father Abe Weissman, and Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men) as Midge’s mother Rose Weissman.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot has garnered an average customer rating of 4.8, with 92 per cent five-star reviews.

“Rachel Brosnahan, who stole scenes in House of Cards for several seasons, steps up to the plate with all the zeal of a star leading lady and knocks it out of the park,” we wrote in our review. “The result is a hilarious and uplifting tale of a woman finding her own identity outside of marriage. The title may be The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but the emphasis is firmly on “marvelous”. We can’t wait to see a full season – Amazon would be foolish not to order more immediately.”
