American Gods will return for a third season – and will once again air on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

The show, which just premiered its second season this month (read our review here), is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by award-winning author, Neil Gaiman. Starring Ricky Whittle (The 100, Nappily Ever After) as Shadow Moon and Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick) as Mr. Wednesday, it tells the story of a war brewing between Old Gods and New Gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Season 2 finds the battle moving inexorably towards crisis point as their destinies collide with those of men. In this strange new world, faith requires terrible sacrifice.

Now, within a week of its sophomore debut, STARZ has ordered a third season – and appointed the show’s third showrunner to oversee it. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green initially served as co-showrunners, but departed over creative differences as the series moved towards a second season. Jesse Alexander then came onboard to steer Season 2 forwards, but reportedly stepped back from production towards the end of the season.

“Michael and Bryan did a fantastic job of introducing it. Whatever went on, you never know, because lawyers came in, so you’ll never know the true story,” Ian McShane told us at a preview screening of Season 2. “You’ll never know the reasons because there are gag orders not to talk about it, but they left behind lots of ideas, which could still be used. It was a question of who the hell was going to step in. Top writer? Top showrunner? Step into that job in Season 2? No, you needed an editor who was willing to come in and sort out and clean it and then, towards the end, be a little more creative. And Jesse did his best, and it was fine, up to a point. Then it became a question of how do you end the show again, what you do to set the stage for Season 3. And I think, yeah, we did not a bad job on it, you know?”

Now, STARZ has hired Charles “Chic” Eglee to take over as showrunner. Best known for his work on Hemlock Grove, The Walking Dead, Dexter and The Shield, he will shepherd the series through its third season.

“I’m thrilled American Gods has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee,” says Gaiman. “Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the American Gods torch on to glory. Thank you to Fremantle, Starz and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers. It’s their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter.”

American Gods Season 1 and 2 are on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, as part of a £5.99 monthly subscription. New episodes arrive weekly.
