BAFTAs 2020: Joker and The Irishman lead award nominees

Staff Writer

Reading time: 6 mins

Joker and The Irishman are leading the 2020 BAFTA Film Awards nominees, in a year where Netflix is officially a major contender.

The streaming giant enjoyed success last year with seven nominations for Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma, plus one for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. This year, it has 23 nominations to its name, with 10 for The Irishman include, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Irishman is pipped only by Joker, which has 11 nominations in total, including Best Film, Best Director and Leading Actor. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood joins The Irishman on 10 nominations, just ahead of 1917 with nine nominations, with both up for Best Film alongside Bong Joon’ho’s Parasite (four in total – including Director, a category still notably lacking in female nominees).

Netflix’s other big hitters are Marriage Story and The Two Popes, with both racking up five nods apiece – the same as Greta Gerwig’s Little Woman. Marriage Story is up for Original Screenplay, Leading Actress and Leading Actor, while The Two Popes is up for Leading Actor (Jonathan Pryce), Supporting Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Outstanding British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. Both are also up for the new BAFTA category of Casting, which also includes Joker, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and The Personal History of David Copperfield (the latter film’s sole nomination).

While Netflix is also enjoying nods for Klaus (Animated Feature) and a double-nod in Best Documentary for The Great Hack and American Factory, the latter two are up against another major contender: For Sama, which is also up for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, Film Not in the English Language and Outstanding British Film. With For Sama, like Netflix’s nominees, easily available to stream on All 4, and Wild Rose (deservedly receiving a nod for Jessie Buckley’s performance) available with Amazon Prime, this year’s awards race has rarely been so accessible for viewers as well as voters. With that kind of step forwards taking place within the industry, it is all the more striking that the list of nominees has once again been criticised for its lack of diversity (all the acting nominees are white, with Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson nominated twice) and its lack of focus on British films.

The BAFTAs will be presented on Sunday 2nd February at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast on BBC One.
