Atypical will officially return to Netflix this July, and new images give us a first look at the fourth and final season.

The coming-of-age comedy, created, written and executive produced by Robia Rashid (How I Met Your Mother, Will & Grace), follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal?

Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as his mother, Elsa, while Michael Rapaport plays his father, Doug. The cast also includes Bridgette Lundy-Paine as Sam’s sister, Casey, and Amy Okuda as Julia, Sam’s therapist. Gilchrist, Jason Leigh, Rapaport, Lundy-Paine and Okuda will all return for Season 4, alongside Nik Dodani, Jenna Boyd, Graham Rogers and Fivel Stewart. The season picks up after Sam’s preparations to start college in Season 3.

Season 4 will premiere on Friday 9th July. Here are the images:

Netflix’s Atypical renewed for fourth and final season

Netflix has renewed Atypical for a fourth and final season.

Season 3 debuted last year, charting Sam‘s preparations to begin college, and to figure out what success means for him, on top of the existing pressures of growing up.

Gilchrist, Jason Leigh, Rapaport, Lundy-Paine and Okuda will all return for Season 4, alongside Nik Dodani, Jenna Boyd, Graham Rogers and Fivel Stewart.

“I’m thrilled we’ll be doing a season four of Atypical,” Rashad said in a statement. “And while I’m so sad to be nearing the end of this series, I am extremely grateful to have been able to tell this story. Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show. Thank you for being so open to Sam’s voice and stories, and those of the entire Gardner family. It’s my hope that the legacy of Atypical is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view.”

The 10-episode final season will air in 2021.
