Only a few weeks after the cast has been officially announced for Netflix’s adaptation of Persuasion, the streamer is already unveiling the first images of its stars in action.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Carrie Cracknell, who directed Jake Gyllenhall and Tom Sturridge to Tony nominations last year in Sea Wall/ A Life on Broadway. It is adapted from the Jane Austen classic by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow, promising to take “a modern, witty approach to a beloved story” while still remaining true to the book.
The pictures, though, suggest something that’s very traditional and period indeed, although Netflix’s unveiling of the images comes with the comment that it will be “most exciteable”.
They show us Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot. Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, she is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. Also pictured is Cosmo Jarvis as Frederick Wentworth — the dashing one she once sent away, who crashes back into her life, leaving Anne to choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances. Also pictured is Henry Golding as Mr Elliot.
Also among the cast are Lydia Rose Bewley (The Inbetweeners), Yolanda Kettle (Marcella), Edward Bluemel (Killing Eve), Suki Waterhouse (The Divergent Series: Insurgent), Richard E Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW), Ben Bailey Smith (The Split), Izuka Hoyle (The Outpost), Mia McKenna-Bruce (Get Even) and Nia Towle (The Hollow).
Production on the film is now underway in the UK, with a release date set for 2022.
