Netflix is getting The Boys in the Band back together this September, with a star-studded new adaptation of Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking 1968 play – and we’ve got our first look at the film’s impressive cast.

Produced by Ryan Murphy, the project reunites the entire cast of the Tony-winning 2018 Broadway revival of the play, which put gay men’s lives center stage with honesty and humor. In 1968 New York City – when being gay was still considered to be best kept behind closed doors – a group of friends gather for a raucous birthday party hosted by Michael (Jim Parsons), a screenwriter who spends and drinks too much, in honor of the sharp-dressed and sharp-tongued Harold (Zachary Quinto).

Other partygoers include Donald (Matt Bomer), Michael’s former flame, now mired in self-analysis; Larry (Andrew Rannells), a randy commercial artist living with Hank (Tuc Watkins), a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington), a librarian tiptoeing around fraught codes of friendship alongside Emory (Robin de Jesús), a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler (Charlie Carver), hired to be Harold’s gift for the night. What begins as an evening of drinks and laughs gets upended when Alan (Brian Hutchison), Michael’s straight-laced college roommate, shows up unexpectedly and each man is challenged to confront long-buried truths that threaten the foundation of the group’s tight bond.

Director Joe Mantello is at the helm, with Crowley and Ned Martel adapting the play for the screen. The result premieres on Netflix on 30th September. Read on for the first images of the ensemble in action.

Ryan Murphy to reunite The Boys in the Band for Netflix

18th April 2019

Ryan Murphy is getting The Boys in the Band back together for a new Netflix adaptation of the hit Broadway show.

The film event will be produced by American Horror Story and Glee’s Ryan Murphy, as part of his overall deal with the streaming giant. It follows the news that he will be adapting Broadway musical The Prom for Netflix too, as he brings a slice of digital theatre to screens worldwide.

“Last summer, THE BOYS IN THE BAND were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth,” Murphy announced on Instagram. “THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event. ”

Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway revival, will direct the film adaptation, with David Stone and Ned Martel also producing.

The entire Broadway cast will reprise their roles for the film, including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington and Brian Hutchison.

“The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley’s seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart’s landmark play,” added Murphy.
