Fleabag will not return for Season 3, one of its stars has revealed.
Created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the BBC Three series has been an international smash hit, as the dry-witted, angry, cash-strapped, grief-riddled, porn-watching eponymous young woman has won over viewers in the US as well as the UK with her hilarious, honest attempt to distract herself from the screaming void inside her heart.
Last month, the comedy returned for a second season, with Waller-Bridge reprising her titular role in Season 2, alongside returning cast members Olivia Colman (Godmother), Bill Paterson (Dad), Brett Gelman (Martin), Jenny Rainsford (Boo) Hugh Skinner (Harry), and Sian Clifford as Fleabag’s sister, Claire. Now, Clifford has revealed that the show will not return for a third outing.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast this morning, she revealed that the show will end with Season 2, as the story “is complete”.
“There will not be a third series,” she elaborated. “This is it. I think I’ve described it online as this beautiful perfect ending, and it is, but I think what it’s closer to is poetry. “
“I think people will accept that this is the end when they see it, because I think it is complete. I think the story is complete,” she added.
Fans, though, may well live in hope regardless. Indeed, Waller-Bridge originally didn’t want to do a second season, after Season 1’s release.
“I decided to not to do a second season, and I had real pride in my artistic integrity,” Waller-Bridge recently told the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.
“I may be surprised again,” she added.
Season 2, meanwhile, is building to a dramatic finale on Monday 8th April, with the first five episodes available on BBC iPlayer, alongside Season 1. Season 2 sees Dame Kristin Scott Thomas and Fiona Shaw join the ensemble, alongside Andrew Scott as a hot priest.
“It rattles along at a caustic, breakneck pace, reminding you just how good a writer and character choreographer Waller-Bridge is,” we wrote in our review of Season 2.
