Another day, another studio tapping into a much-loved franchise to fuel its fledgling streaming platform. This time, it’s WarnerMedia, which will using one of its most fondly regarded classics as the starting point for a new series: Gremlins.

Warner has given the green light to a half-hour animated show called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The 10-part series is a prequel to the original 1984 movie. Written by Tze Chun, it tells the story of shop owner Mr. Wing, originally played by Keye Luke.

Set in 1920s Shanghai, it reveals how Wing as a 10-year-old met the young Mogwai Gizmo, who takes him on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering creatures from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of Gremlins.

Secrets of the Mogwai is produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros Animation and is exec-produced by Amblin’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, Sam Register (Animaniacs), with Chun and Brendan Hay (Robot Chicken) serving as co-EPs.

Other Warners projects in the pipeline include Dune: The Sisterhood, Station Eleven, Made For Love, Tokyo Vice and Love Life.
