Cannes winner Bacurau will be released in UK cinemas in March 2020, MUBI has announced.

The subscription streaming service, which has increasingly ventured into theatrical distribution, acquired the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize Winner earlier this year.

Bacurau, a small settlement in Brazil’s remote backcountry, is shaken by the death of its elderly matriarch. But something strange is happening in the village, and there’s little time for mourning. The water supply has been cut off, animals are stampeding through the streets, and empty coffins are turning up on the roadside. One morning, the villagers wake up to find their home has disappeared from satellite maps completely. Under threat from an unknown enemy, Bacurau braces itself for a bloody, brutal fight for survival. Starring Bárbara Colen, Udo Kier and Sonia Braga, the neo-Western revenge thriller tips its hat to Sergio Leone and John Carpenter, with Kleber Mendonça Filho sharing directorial credit with long-time collaborator Juliano Dornelles.

MUBI debuted the film in the UK at the London Film Festival last month. Now, it’s confirmed it will follow that with a cinema release on 13th March 2020, before making it available to stream exclusively on MUBI from 27th March.
