Netflix announces Tomb Raider animated series
Tomb Raider is heading to Netflix for an animated series.
The series, co-produced with Legendary Television, is the second animated show based on Square Enix’s global franchise.
Tomb Raider’s protagonist Lara Croft has been a contemporary global icon for over two decades and the franchise has sold over 81 million copies worldwide, also spawning a series of blockbuster films based on the original Tomb Raider game and 2013 reboot.
Netflix’s Tomb Raider series will pick up after the events of the video-game reboot trilogy, charting the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. 25 years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.
The series will hail from dj2 Entertainment, a production company specialising in adapting video games as series and features. The company’s first theatrical release, Sonic the Hedgehog, is the highest-grossing video-game-based feature film of all time. Tomb Raider marks the second project announced as a result of Legendary Television and dj2 Entertainment’s current first look deal, following a TV adaptation of My Friend Pedro.
Executive Producers on the show include Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Red Sonja), who will write, dj2 Entertainment Founder and CEO Dmitri M Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog), Stephan Bugaj and Howard Bliss; Jacob Robinson, under his company Tractor Pants.
The series marks Netflix’s ongoing relationship with Legendary Television, with a Skull Island series also announced today and the two companies are currently in production on the previously announced anime series Pacific Rim: The Black.
