Netflix orders Spanish spin-off from Bird Box
Staff Writer
Netflix is expanding its Bird Box universe with a Spanish spin-off.
Directed by Susanne Bier (The Night Manager), the original film was adapted from Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name by Eric Heisserer. It followed the aftermath of a mysterious force decimating the world’s population: if you see it, you take your life. Sandra Bullock starred as Malorie, who, facing the unknown, flees with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary – all while blindfolded.
“Sandra Bullock anchors this survival thriller in the immediate, simple terror of its premise” .
The film went on to be one of Netflix’s most-viewed films, with 89 million views racked up in the first four weeks after its release – although the streamer’s statistics should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Regardless of the numbers, though, Netflix is clearly confident in the franchise potential, with a Spanish project now given the green light.
Dylan Clark (Bird Box, The Batman) and Chris Morgan (Bird Box, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw) will both produce, along with Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls for Nostromo Pictures, while exec-producers will include Susanne Bier (Bird Box), Ainsley Davies for Chris Morgan Productions and Brian Williams for Dylan Clark Productions.
Alex and David Pastor (The Occupant, The Head, Carriers, Los Últimos Dias) are on board to write an direct.
The title is not yet confirmed, but production will begin towards the end of this year.
