Netflix shelves Nancy Meyers rom-com

Netflix has shelved its planned Nancy Meyers rom-com, reportedly over budget concerns.

The streaming giant announced last year that it was teaming up with Meyers for the project. Meyers, who won a screenwriting Oscar for Private Benjamin, has become the queen of the romantic comedy genre, writing and directing such modern classics as The Holiday and Something’s Gotta Give.

Provisionally titled Paris Paramount, the new movie is understood to be semi-autobiographical and follow two exes in Hollywood who end up working together. The film had begun to amass a star-studded cast including Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender. However, with great talent comes great financial costs. While Meyers’ last film, The Intern, made $135 million on a $35 million budget, the new film had a budget of more than $100 million.

Now, Netflix has reportedly pulled out and, talent availability pending, it is thought that the movie will be shipped to other prospective buyers.
