Netflix teases new images from The Witcher Season 2

Staff Writer

Netflix is giving fans a string of early Christmas presents with several new images of The Witcher Season 2 unveiled.

Based on the best-selling fantasy series of books, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. It tells the story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Season 2 sees Geralt of Rivia bring Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows: his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.

Production on the programme has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic and by an injury to Cavill, but Netflix is keeping fans looking ahead to the show’s return. Three enigmatic photos from the set of Season 2 include a possible hint about a March release date and some medallions with new crests on them. They join a number of other items released online by the show’s Twitter account as part of a “6 Days of Witchmas”. including a second bestiary video rounding up the show’s memorable critters and creatures.

First look: Henry Cavill in The Witcher Season 2

5th October 2020

Netflix has dropped the first images of Henry Cavill in The Witcher Season 2.

The fantasy epic, based on the hit book series of the same name, stars Cavill (Mission Impossible – Fallout, Man of Steel) as Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter in the volatile kingdom of The Continent.

Season 2 will see him return alongside Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) as the sorceress Yennefer, Freya Allan (Third Day, Gunpowder Milkshake) as Ciri and Joey Batey (Knightfall, Strike) as fan-favourite Jaskier – plus Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve) as Vesemir, a relic of the Witcher Golden Age.

While Cavill reprising his lead role in the franchise may not be a surprise, the pictures do give us a look at Geralt in his new armour and Cavill looking increasingly at home in it. There’s no word yet on a release date for the show’s sophomore run, given the interruption to production posed by the coronavirus pandemic, but with new images arriving now, it’s safe to presume that production has resumed on once more. Expect Season 2 to arrive in 2021.

Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia joins The Witcher Season 2

3rd March 2020

Killing Eve’s Kim Bodnia has joined the cast of The Witcher for its second season.

Netflix’s fantasy epic, based on the hit book series of the same name, stars Henry Cavill (Mission Impossible – Fallout, Man of Steel) as Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter in the volatile kingdom of The Continent. Alongside him, Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) returns for Season 2 as the sorceress Yennefer, Freya Allan (Third Day, Gunpowder Milkshake) as Ciri and Joey Batey (Knightfall, Strike) as fan-favourite Jaskier.

Joining them will be Kim Bodnia as Vesemir, a relic of the Witcher Golden Age. The oldest and most experienced Witcher on The Continent, the charming veteran is a survivor of the massacre that nearly wiped out the Witchers, which left him both protective of those still left behind and a father figure to Geralt. A mentor to a lone figure who violently dispatches people from existence? It’s a natural fit for Bodnia, who became a fan favourite as Konstantin, mentor to assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve.

“I am so thrilled to welcome Kim Bodnia to the cast of The Witcher,” EP and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement. “I have admired his unique talents in shows like Killing Eve and The Bridge, and cannot wait for him to bring strength, tenacity, and warmth to the character of Vesemir, who is such an integral part of our upcoming season.”

He joins the cast alongside other new additions Yasen Atourn, Agnes Born, Paul Bullion, Thue Ersted Rasmussen, Aisha Fabienne Ross, Kristofer Hivju and Mecia Simson.

Other returning cast include MyAnna Buring (Kill List) as Tissaia, Tom Canton (Good Karma Hospital) as Filavandrel, Lilly Cooper (Peterloo) as Murta, Jeremy Crawford (Titans) as Yarpin Zigrin, Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks) as Cahir, Mahesh Jadu (Marco Polo) as Vilgefortz, Terence Maynard (Cursed) as Artorius, Lars Mikkelson (House of Cards) as Stregobor, Mimi Ndiweni (Black Earth Rising) as Fringilla Vigo, Royce Pierreson (Judy) as Istredd, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (Hunter Street) as Dara, Anna Shaffer (Harry Potter) as Triss Merigold, Therica Wilson Read (Young Wallander) as Sabrina.

He leads a wave of new additions to the cast, including Yasen Atour (Young Wallander) as Coen, Agnes Bjorn (Monster) as Vereena, Paul Bullion (Peaky Blinders) as Lambert, Thue Ersted Rasmussen (Fast and Furious 9) as Eskel, Aisha Fabienne Ross (The Danish Girl) as Lydia and recent graduate Mecia Simson, as Francesca.

The Witcher showrunner and Executive Producer, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s The Defenders, Umbrella Academy) comments: “The reaction to season one of The Witcher set a high bar for adding new talent for the second season. Sophie Holland and her casting team have once again found the very best people to embody these characters, and in the hands of these accomplished directors, we’re excited to see these new stories come to life.”

Production will begin this month in the UK, ready for a 2021 release date.
