Netflix to release Malcolm & Marie in February

Staff Writer

Netflix will release Malcolm & Marie in February 2021.

Zendaya and John David Washington’s lockdown movie was a secret production that came to light earlier this year during the coronavirus pandemic. Director and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson teamed up with the Euphoria and Tenet stars for the romantic drama in which a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

The film was taken to the Toronto International Film Festival for shopping at the marketplace, and was swiftly snapped up by Netflix. Now, the streaming has confirmed that it will be released worldwide online on 5th February 2021.

Malcolm & Marie: Netflix nabs Zendaya and John David Washington lockdown movie

Netflix has nabbed the global rights to Malcolm & Marie, Zendaya and John David Washington’s lockdown movie.

Sam Levinson teamed up with the Euphoria and Tenet stars for the romantic drama in which a filmmaker (Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love.

A secret production, the film came to light earlier this summer as a surprise completed production during the coronavirus pandemic. Shooting took place between 17th June and 2nd July at Feldman Architecture’s Caterpillar House, an environmentally conscious glass home in Carmel, California – the producers worked with doctors and lawyers to make sure that the production was fully compliant with WGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA approvals and COVID-19 safety protocols. The film was shot on 35mm in black and white by cinematographer Marcell Rev.

The film was taken to the Toronto International Film Festival for shopping at the marketplace, and has now been snapped up by Netflix – the third acquisition made by Netflix in as many days, following the purchase of Halle Berry’s work-in-progress MMA drama Bruised and the snapping up of Pieces of a Woman, which won a prize for star Vanessa Kirby at Venice.

Levinson said: “I am so grateful to this cast and crew, many of whom are my Euphoria family, for coming together during such uncertain times. We felt privileged to be able to make this film together and we did so with a lot of love. We are all thrilled that it has ended up with Netflix which is unparalleled in allowing filmmakers the freedom to tell their stories that reach audiences all over the world.”

The cast and crew of Malcolm & Marie will share a portion of the proceeds of this sale with hunger relief organisation Feeding America.
