Nomadland set for UK release on Disney+ this April

Staff Writer

Nomadland will officially be released on UK screens this April, with a digital premiere on Disney+.

The film is based Jessica Bruder’s acclaimed book, adapted by writer and director Chloé Zhao for the screen. It stars Frances McDormand, David Strathairn and real-life actors Swankie, Bob Wells and Linda May, all of whom appeared in the book.

The film follows Fern (McDormand), who, after the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The film was produced by McDormand, along with Peter Spears (Call Me by Your Name), Dan Janvey (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Mollye Asher (The Rider) and Zhao (The Rider). Zhao also edited the film, with Joshua James Richards (God’s Own Country) serving as Director of Photography and Production Designer.

The movie has been racking up awards attention since its world premiere in September 2020, most recently bagging Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director at the Golden Globes. It played at last year’s London Film Festival, but did not stream online as part of the hybrid physical and virtual event, which makes this April the first time it will be available to stream for UK and Ireland viewers.

Nomadland will join the Star section on Disney+, the newly launched brand on the subscription service that provides a home for the more adult-friendly Searchlight, 20th Century Studios and FX productions.

Unlike Raya and the Last Dragon and Mulan, Nomadland will be available on Disney+ at no additional charge to subscribers. It will premiere on 30th April in the UK and Ireland.

The movie will then be available to UK and Irish cinemas for theatrical performances once cinemas re-open and the current coronavirus lockdowns are lifted.
