Netflix has nabbed the global rights to Pieces of a Woman, fresh from winning a prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Directed by White Dog helmer Kornél Mundruczó, making his English-language debut, and written by Kata Wéber, the film follows Martha and Sean Carson, a Boston couple on the verge of parenthood whose lives change irrevocably during a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife, who faces charges of criminal negligence. Thus begins a year-long odyssey for Martha, who must navigate her grief while working through fractious relationships with her husband and her domineering mother, along with the publicly vilified midwife whom she must face in court.

“My wife and I wanted to share one of our most personal experiences with audiences through a story of an unborn child; with the faith that art can be the best medicine for pain,” said Mundruczó in a statement. “With Pieces of a Woman, we wanted to form an authentic story about tragedy, and learning to live alongside that grief. Loss steps beyond the boundaries of understanding or control for all of us, but comes with the ability to be reborn.”

The film stars Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf, along with Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger and Benny Safdie. The film, which premiered at Venice, won the Best Actress prize for Kirby’s performance in her first lead role.
