Trailer: High Seas sets sail on Netflix this May

“People got on the ship truly believing it would be the voyage of their lives. How wrong they were!” So reads the ominous captain’s log for the Bárbara de Braganza, the ship that sails Netflix’s High Seas this spring.
The Spanish series, created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira and directed by Carlos Sedes, is an eight-part mystery-drama set in the 1940s on the luxury transatlantic ship. Travelling from Europe to South America in search of a better future are two sisters, Carolina (Alejandra Onieva) and Eva (Ivana Baquero), as different as they are inseparable, plus handsome officer Nicolás Sala (Jon Kortajarena), a man that fate has put in the wrong place. Before the trio is out, a mystery must be solved: the murder of a passenger whose name does not appear in the passenger list and who no one remembers. There is only one clear thing: The murderer will not be able to leave the ship.
The series docks onto Netflix on 24th May. Here’s the atmospheric trailer:
First look: Netflix’s High Seas begins production

Netflix’s Spanish thriller High Seas has officially begun production, and the streaming service has given us a first look at the series.
High Seas is an eight-episode mystery-drama series set in the 1940s in a luxury transatlantic ship. Travelling from Europe to South America in search of a better future are two sisters, Carolina (Alejandra Onieva) and Eva (Ivana Baquero), as different as they are inseparable, plus handsome officer Nicolás Sala (Jon Kortajarena), a man that fate has put in the wrong place. Before the trio is out, a mystery must be solved: the murder of a passenger whose name does not appear in the passenger list and who no one remembers. There is only one clear thing: The murderer will not be able to leave the ship.
In order to recreate the ship, several sets with a surface of more than 2.700m2 have been built. The production team has done research on the time period for several months in order to portray this decade with the utmost realism.
Carlos Bodelón, art director of the series, says: “The set of High Seas is one of the most ambitious projects we have ever faced. The final result is impressive: we have been able to recreate the luxury and the glamour of a cruise ship from that decade. We have designed the furniture and added elements from the 1940s, including the navigation bridge mechanisms (helm, telegraph, etc), that are authentic.”
The series is produced by Bambú Producciones, created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira and directed by Carlos Sedes who is also the executive producer along with Teresa Fernández Valdés and Ramón Campos. It will premiere globally in 2019.

High Seas: Netflix boards Spanish murder mystery

Netflix is setting sail to Spain for its latest original thriller, High Seas.
The series takes a leaf out of Agatha Christie’s book by combining a murder mystery with a boat. The eight-episode drama is set in the 1940s and whisks us aboard a magnificent transatlantic ship full of passengers travelling from Europe to South America in search of a better future.
Two sisters, Carolina (Alejandra Onieva) and Eva (Ivana Baquero), as different as they are inseparable. A handsome officer, Nicolás Sala (Jon Kortajarena), a man that fate has put in the wrong place. A mystery to be solved: the murder of a passenger whose name does not appear in the passenger list and who no one remembers. Love, intrigues and many lies… in a ship that hides a story in each one of its cabins and a dark secret deep inside. There is only one clear thing: The murderer will not be able to leave the ship.
Created by Ramón Campos and Gema R. Neira and written by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira Daniel Martín Serrano, Curro Novallas and José Antonio Valverde, Netflix’s fourth Spanish original series will be directed by Carlos Sedes who will be also Executive Producer with Teresa Fernández Valdés and Ramón Campos.
Ramón Campos, executive producer, says: “We are very happy to collaborate again with Netflix in what is already our third project together. High Seas allows us to return to the genre of mystery in a wonderful environment. We have the best team headed by the director Carlos Sedes and Jacobo Martínez as cinematographer, both of the responsible of some of our our greatest successes: Gran Hotel, Velvet or Las chicas del cable.”
Other characters include José Sacristán as Uncle Pedro (Velvet, Tiempos de guerra), Eloy Azorín as Fernando (Apaches, La que se avecina, Gran Hotel), Felix Gomez as Anibal (Ella es tu padre, Carlos, Rey Emperador), Tamar Novas as Sebastián (Elisa y Marcela, Fariña), among others.
“We are proud to continue our relationship with Bambú and to create another great series that will appeal to audiences around the world,” says Erik Barmack, Vice President of International Originals at Netflix. “A murder mystery on the high seas will be a great adventure for our audience, and we know that this team has the ability to execute it at the highest level.”
High Seas will premiere on Netflix in 2019.
