Netflix is kicking off a new documentary this summer all about Nicolas Anelka.

Bad boy or football genius? The French footballer has been called arrogant, precocious, misunderstood, unclassifiable, genius, unmanageable – and, despite a having a career of almost 20 years in top-flight football, he’s still hard to define.

It’s an image that Anelka himself has cultivated, and Netflix is taking viewers inside that persona with a new documentary. For seven years, Franck Nataf has followed Nicolas in his day-to-day life. His experiences in China, India, his life far away from France, his children’s birthdays, his moments of relaxation with friends Paul Pogba, Thierry Henry or Patrice Evra. The director aims to show the former number 9 in a different light.

For the first time and exclusively, Anelka will revisit the entirety of his career, in a documentary that covers 40 years, from Trappes in the impoverished Parisian suburbs to winning the European Championship title with Les Bleus, scoring the English Premier League title with Arsenal and Chelsea. He also talks about the lowest moments, the 2010 World Cup, the insults he allegedly directed at his manager, and his “immature tough guy” image.

The series premieres on 5th August on Netflix. Here’s the trailer:
