What’s coming soon to Disney+ in August 2020?
Reading time: 6 mins
Disney’s Netflix rival is here, serving up Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar originals, along with a post-modern revamp of High School Musical and almost every episode of The Simpsons. Except, due to both the coronavirus pandemic and Disney’s newcomer status in the streaming game, a lot of that original new content is a while off yet.
August sees three new original films arrive – including heartwarming gorilla flick The One and Only Ivan and a new Phineas and Ferb – plus there’s the chance to go back to the start of Once Upon a Time or catch up with X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and the bonus of new episodes of Muppets Now each week.
Here’s what’s coming soon to Disney+ UK in August 2020:
Howard – 7th August
Directed by Don Hahn, Howard is the untold story of Howard Ashman, the brilliant lyricist behind Disney classics like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and creator of musicals including Little Shop of Horrors. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, personal films and photographs, as well as interviews with Howard’s friends and family, the film is an intimate look at the Disney Legend’s life, his creative drive, and the process behind the music.
Muppets Now: Episode 2 – 7th August
Fozzie Bear has some big ideas for Muppets Now, and there’s no time like the deadline to start pitching! He’s found a very tough audience in Scooter, who just wants to finish uploading the latest delivery. We see the very first episode of a game show that Pepe The King Prawn totally just made up. The Swedish Chef tries to cook a better molé sauce than his competitor, Danny Trejo. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew has replaced Beaker with a new smart assistant, and things get fired up. Miss Piggy and her guests, Taye Diggs and Linda Cardellini, show viewers how to work it out when they share the secret to staying healthy.
Once Upon a Time: Season 1 to 4 – 7th August
ABC’s fantasy series sees Mary (Ginnifer Goodwin) drawn to the small Maine town of Storybrooke, where elements of the fairy tale universe seep into the modern, real world. That, it turns out, is because the Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla) has sent everyone from the Enchanted Forest to the Land Without Magic after wiping their memories with a curse from – yes – Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). Stories unfold through flashbacks to characters’ former lives, which tend to parallel action in the present day, gradually piecing together the whole mystery of each person’s identity.
The One and Only Ivan – 14th August
Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be. Directed by Thea Sharrock, the film features the voices of Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren and stars Bryan Cranston.
Magic Camp – 14th August
As a boy attending the Institute of Magic, a secluded mountain retreat which plays host to a bevy of aspiring young magicians each summer, Andy Duckerman (Adam Devine) was a camp legend. Now, at 35, he’s struggling to make ends meet as a professional illusionist and is frustrated and depressed by the direction his career has taken. But when the Institute invites Andy to return as a counsellor, he finds himself in charge of the greenest and most awkward wannabe magicians, and having to deal with his former partner and current arch rival, Kristina Darkwood (Gillian Jacobs), who’s also a counsellor. As Andy slowly gains the respect of his team of ragtag artists, they in turn inspire him to nurture each of their unique talents while preparing them to compete with the camp’s more experienced magicians in the Institute’s annual Top Hat magic contest.
Weird But True! – 14th August
Children’s entertainers and educators Charlie Engelman and Carly Ciarrocchi host the third season of the Emmy Award-winning series Weird But True! and this time, they’re embarking on even more imaginative and strange adventures to reveal surprising and interesting facts about the world. Set both in studio and in the field, Weird But True! is a 13-episode series that integrates a mix of arts and crafts, unbelievable facts and real-life exploration.

Scooter wakes up in horror to discover his all-nighters have finally gotten the best of him, and he has only 30 minutes to upload Muppets Now. With the clock ticking and his eyelids drooping, Scooter enlists Animal to help him stay awake.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix – 21st August
Jean Grey’s evolution into Dark Phoenix gets a second attempt at a screen adaptation in this X-Men sequel, which sees Jean hit by a cosmic force during a space mission that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart.
Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe – 28th August
Phineas and Ferb are back. And this time they’re setting out across the galaxy to rescue their older sister Candace (Ashley Tisdale), who after being abducted by aliens, finds utopia in a far-off planet, free of pesky little brothers.
Muppets Now: Episode 5 – 28th August
Chip the I.T. guy installs an upgrade to Scooter’s overtaxed computer just as Scooter is beginning to upload the latest episode of Muppets Now. Scooter must work fast to get everything in place before the hard reboot goes into effect.
