Staff Writer

Disney’s Netflix rival is here, serving up Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar originals, along with a post-modern revamp of High School Musical and every episode of The Simpsons.

Disney+ may be dropping Marvel’s latest series, Moon Knight, this month – Netflix’s Defenders series are arriving in Canada on the 16th and expected on this side of the pond soon – but it’s all about Disney+ Star in the coming weeks, with a winning combination of Hulu’s The Dropout, Spielberg’s West Side Story, Mimi Cave’s Fresh, Pixar’s Turning Red, Ridley Scott’s Alien and Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley.

Here’s what’s coming soon to Disney+ UK in March 2022:

West Side Story – 2nd March

Steven Spielberg takes on the iconic musical in this quietly bold remake.

The Dropout: Season 1 – 3rd March

Money. Romance. Tragedy. Deception. From Executive Producer Elizabeth Meriwether, The Dropout is the story of Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) and Theranos, an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world’s youngest self-made billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye? Episodes 1 to 3 arrive together, then drop weekly.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) – 4th March

This impeccable adaptation of John le Carre’s spy thriller is an atmospheric puzzle of betrayal, distrust and decline.

Calvary (2014) – 4th March

John Michael McDonagh’s drama, starring Brendan Gleeson, is a powerful story of a decent man coming to terms with his own mortality.

How I Met Your Father: Season 1 – 9th March

Created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, the sequel to How I Met Your Mother was officially given the green light last year. Set the near future, it follows Sophie as she tells her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the present where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options. Episodes 1 and 2 arrive together, with episodes then arriving weekly.

Turning Red – 11th March

Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! The film is directed by Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao) and produced by Lindsey Collins.

Grey’s Anatomy: Season 17 – 16th March

Solidifying its place in TV history as the longest-running primetime medical drama, the beloved cultural touchstone pushes boundaries with timely subjects and characters that break the mould. Follow Meredith Grey and the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, as they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.

Nightmare Alley (2022) – 16th March

Guillermo del Toro’s star-studded remake follows an ambitious carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people as He hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is.

Alien – 18th March

This sci-fi horror classic is a precisely terrifying feat of film-making in every possible way.

Cheaper by the Dozen – 18th March

A reimagining of the 2003 hit family comedy about the raucous exploits of a blended family of 12, the Bakers. Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff star as Zoey and Paul, a husband and wife navigating a hectic home life while simultaneously managing their family business: Baker’s Breakfast, a local eatery that serves nothing but breakfast (and Paul’s to-die-for sweet and savory sauce). With expansion plans for the restaurant in the works, Paul decides to move the family to a much bigger house to an upscale suburb, but the move across town and its effect on the kids is more stressful than Paul and Zoey anticipated. With the fate of their loving, tightknit family in jeopardy, it is up to Paul to find a life that is the perfect size for all their dreams.

Fresh – 18th March

Fresh follows Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones), who meets the alluring Steve (Sebastian Stan) at a grocery store and – given her frustration with dating apps – takes a chance and gives him her number. After their first date, Noa is smitten and accepts Steve’s invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye – 23rd March

Michael Showalter directs this look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, starring Jessica Chastain.

Parallels: Season 1 – 23rd March

Four childhood friends, Sam, Bilal, Romane and Victor, are leading a calm existence in a peaceful village in the mountains when a mysterious event turns their worlds upside down. In a split second, the universe discards its rules and reshuffles everything: the present, the future and multiverses merge, separating the teens and sending them into parallel worlds, in different time frames. They set about trying to fathom out what happened and strive to find each other and turn the clocks back, to return to the world the world they used to live in. Facing their potential destinies will be the opportunity to grow up and to see things a new way, as their parents will or as Lieutenant Retz will, having to deal for the first time with an investigation challenging his scientific mind.

The Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild – 25th March

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild continues the hilarious escapades of everyone’s favourite prehistoric mammals. Desperate for some distance from their older sister Ellie, the thrillseeking possum brothers Crash and Eddie set out to find a place of their own, but quickly find themselves trapped in a massive cave underground. They are rescued by the one-eyed, adventure-loving, dinosaur-hunting weasel, Buck Wild, and together they must face the unruly dinosaurs who inhabit the Lost World.

Moon Knight: Season 1 – 30th March

The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. The series stars Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy. Episodes arrive weekly.
