What’s coming soon to Netflix in April 2021?

What do Idris Elba, Sarah Paulson, Anna Kendrick, Dolly Parton, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Foxx and Lady Gaga have in common? They’re all coming to Netflix UK this April, in a month that veers from survival sci-fi thriller to family entertainment. Elba’s poignant drama Concrete Cowboy brings a festival hit to worldwide audiences, while Paulson stars in Hulu’s Run, the latest from Searching director Aneesh Chaganty. Anna Kendrick takes to space for survival drama Stowaway, while Octavia Spencer teams up with Melissa McCarthy for superhero comedy Thunder Force, Jamie Foxx teams up with his daughter for the comedy series Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!, and Lady Gaga teams up with Bradley Cooper for 2018’s A Star Is Born. As for Dolly Parton? Well, she’s just being celebrated for being awesome.

Here’s what’s coming soon to Netflix in April 2021:

Worn Stories: Season 1 – 1st April

Based on the New York Times Best Seller, Worn Stories opens the closets of a diverse group of people to reveal a treasure-trove of tales about the meaning behind articles of clothing. Be it a pair of boots symbolizing survival, a dress that’s come to stand for recovery, or a uniform that reaffirms an identity.

Tersanjung: The Movie – 1st April

This genre-bending series puts a modern twist on Greek and Roman mythology, exploring themes of gender politics, power and life in the underworld.

Wild Bill – 1st April

Dexter Fletcher’s East London Western is mature, articulate and generally brilliant.

Prank Encounters: Season 2 – 1st April

Gaten Matarazzo returns for another round of Netflix pranks.

Concrete Cowboy – 2nd April

Directed by Rick Staub and starring Idris Elba, this film follows 15-year-old Cole (Caleb McLaughlin), who discovers the world of urban horseback riding when his mother sends him to North Philadelphia to live with his dad, Harp, played by Elba. Based on the novel Ghetto Cowboy by G Neri and co-written by Staub.

Run – 2nd April

Sarah Paulson stars in the latest from Aneesh Chaganty, the director of the inventive thriller Searching. There’s something unnatural about the relationship between the pair, with Diane raising her daughter in isolation, controlling every move since birth. But after years of intense, scrutinised medical care, teenager Chloe desires freedom and suspects her mother might be holding her back.

Bitter Daisies: Season 2 – 2nd April

While investigating the disappearance of a teen girl in a Galician town, a Civil Guard officer uncovers secrets linked to a loss of her own in this Spanish crime drama.

Madame Claude – 2nd April

In 1960s Paris, Madame Claude’s influence extends beyond the world of sex work — until an affluent young woman threatens to change everything.

Just Say Yes – 2nd April

Thunder Force – 9th April

It’s set seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, when all of humanity has been forced to live in underground colonies. After Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien) reconnects over the radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee, who has been living on the coast 80 miles away, he begins to fall for her again. Joel realises that there’s nothing left for him underground, and – despite all the danger that stands in his way – he decides he must venture out to find his true love.

Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!: Season 1 – 14th April

This comedy created by and starring Oscar winner Jamie Foxx is inspired by his relationship with his daughter, Corinne.

The Circle: USA: Season 2 – 14th April

Stowaway – 22nd April

On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Searching For Sheela – 22nd April

A small town in Portugal becomes engulfed in a web of political intrigue when a young engineer is recruited as a KGB spy in this historical thriller.

Shadow and Bone: Season 1 – 23rd April

Based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling Grishaverse novels, the series is set in a world cleaved in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness, where unnatural creatures feast on human flesh, the series follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young soldier who uncovers a power that might finally unite her country. Yasuke: Season 1 – 29th April

In a war-torn feudal Japan of mechs and magic, a retired ronin must take up his sword when he is charged with the task of transporting a mysterious child who dark forces want to eliminate. Created and directed by LeSean Thomas (The Boondocks, Cannon Busters), with Grammy nominee Flying Lotus composing the music and Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Sorry to Bother You) voicing the protagonist.

Rocketman – 30th April

Taron Egerton is electric in an Elton John biopic bursting with invention and energy.

The Mitchells vs the Machines – 30th April

A new animated family comedy from the humans who brought you Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse and The Lego Movie. If follows Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider who is accepted into the film school of her dreams. But her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. Suddenly, the Mitchells’ plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones to appliances and an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it’s time to take over. With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world.
