What’s coming soon to Netflix in September 2019?

School’s back in session for Netflix this September, with the return of Spanish high school thriller Elite, but there’s more than enough to keep you busy between lessons and after homework. New series include Sacha Baron Cohen thriller The Spy, Japan’s soothing reality TV series antidote Terrace House, the revived Top Boy, starring Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson, more mouth-watering cooking from The Chef Show and international crime drama Criminal, featuring David Tennant and Hayley Atwell. Plus there’s a chance to catch up with documentary Surviving R. Kelly, swooning coming-of-ager Call Me By Your Name, the latest run of Australian zombie drama Glitch and, fresh from the US, did we mention Season 4 of The Good Place?

Dirty Dancing – 1st September

Wanderlust: Season 1 – 4th September

Toni Colette stars in this BBC miniseries, which explores marriages and commitment with a surprisingly adult, mature manner.

The Spy: Season 1 – 6th September

Sacha Baron Cohen stars in this new series about Israel’s most prominent spy Eli Cohen, who in the beginning of the 60s operated undercover in Syria. His unprecedented infiltration into the top military and political echelons changed the face of the Middle East but came at a very high personal cost.

Elite: Season 2 – 6th September

The Spanish thriller returns to the country’s best and most exclusive school, where the elite send their children to study. It’s also where three working class kids have just been admitted after their academy was collapsed and the local council divvied up the students between other schools in the area. They thought that they’d lucked out, but maybe they weren’t so lucky after all – because by the end of Season 1, a dead body had turned up and a suspect had been found…

Hip-Hop Evolution: Season 3 – 6th September

Shad Kabango traces the growth of hip-hop subcultures in New York, the South and Oakland, California, in the ’80s and ’90s.

Travels with My Father: Season 3 – 6th September

The I-Land – 12th September

Kate Bosworth stars in Netflix’s sci-fi thriller, which sees 10 people wake up on a treacherous island with no memory of who they are or how they got there. They set off on a trek to try to get back home and soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the I-Land’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves — or die as their worst ones.

The Mind, Explained – 12th September

From dreaming to anxiety disorders, discover what’s happening inside your brain with this illuminating series narrated by Oscar winner Emma Stone.

Top Boy – 13th September

After being forced to flee his East London housing estate, a former kingpin returns home to take back his throne in this revived drama, previously aired on Channel 4, starring Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson.

Unbelievable: Season 1 – 13th September

After a young woman is accused of lying about a rape, two female detectives investigate a spate of eerily similar attacks. Inspired by true events.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato: Season 1 – 13th September

In the midst of the industrial revolution, a mysterious virus turns the infected into the undead. Ikoma and the Iron Fortress take their fight to the battlegrounds of Unato, joining the alliance to reclaim the region from the kabane horde.

The Ranch: Part 7 – 13th September

We return to the Bennett ranch for a penultimate run of family drama and comedy, with Ashton Kutcher once again starring alongside Sam Elliott.

The Chef Show: Season 1, Volume 2 – 13th September

Prepare for more mouth-watering grilled cheese sandwiches – and a lot more food besides – as Chef duo Jon Favreau and Roy Choi return for a second volume of their hugely likeable cooking show.

Criminal: Season 1 – 20th September

In the UK, the regular cast includes Katherine Kelly, Lee Ingleby, Nicholas Pinnock, Mark Stanley, Rochenda Sandall and Shubham Saraf, with guest stars for the episodes including David Tennant, Hayley Atwell, Youssef Kerkour, and Clare-Hope Ashitey.

Glitch: Season 3 – 25th September

Back for a third season of spooky thrills, this Australian zombie drama follows a police officer in the small country town of Yoorana, who finds life turned upside down when six recently deceased residents return from the dead in perfect health.

Abstract: The Art of Design: Season 2 – 25th September

Back for a sophomore run, this original docu-series from Executive Producer Morgan Neville takes us beyond blueprints and computers into the art and science of design, showcasing great designers from every discipline whose work shapes our world.

Call Me By Your Name – 26th September

Explained: Season 2 – 26th September

Produced by Vox Media, Netflix’s short-form documentary comprising several 15-minute episodes of educational information about big questions and global issues, tackling such issues as political correctness, why women are paid less, extraterrestrial life and cryptocurrency.

The Good Place: Season 4 – 27th September

NBC’s fantasy series, about an ordinary woman (Kristen Bell) who is wrongly sent to a pleasant afterlife and must hide in plain sight from its architect (Ted Danson), returns for its fourth and final run. Expect heavenly things.

Bard of Blood – 27th September

An excommunicated RAW agent, Kabir Anand, a courageous analyst, Isha Khanna, and a sleeper agent, Veer Singh, take on a covert mission in Balochistan when four Indian spies are captured. The mission soon turns south and Kabir Anand, played by Emraan Hashmi, must face his demons from the past to end a war before it begins.

The Politician: Season 1 – 27th September

Ryan Murphy’s first Netflix series follows Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, California, who has known since age seven that he’s going to be the President of the United States. But first, he has to navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School.

To get elected Student Body President, secure a spot at Harvard, and stay on his singular path to success, Payton will have to outsmart his ruthless classmates without sacrificing his own morality and carefully crafted image. The dark satire boasts a cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton and Bob Balaban.
