YouTube Rewind 2019 video still draws dislikes

In 2018, YouTube broke records by releasing the most disliked video of YouTube: its annual YouTube Rewind video looking back at the year’s most memorable YouTube moments and creators. When that left out some of the site’s biggest stars, fans responded with a deluge of dislike, throwing the whole yearly tradition into a mire of embarrassment.

This year, then, YouTube has opted for something more traditional, with a straightforward countdown of the most liked videos across a range of categories, including such favourites as PewDiePie and, yes, Minecraft.

“This year, we tried something different and looked at what you did like — a lot,” said YouTube in its blog. “Our Rewind 2019 video compiles the top videos and creators that you liked and watched the most around the world, from the biggest games to must-watch beauty palettes and breakout stars.”

Controversy, though, is still in the air, as fans felt it was lazy of YouTube to simply put together a listicle-style video, the kind that is already rife on the site. So far, 4.7 million dislikes have been racked up by the video.

Actual lists were released as well, with YouTube highlighting 2019 as a year that saw creators transform into mainstream celebrities with genre-defying influence, from James Charles and Tati’s back-and-forth to Shane Dawson’s longform docuseries format and MrBeast’s ultra-charitable challenge videos. Also on this year’s top trending list: A long-requested episode of Hot Ones, a meme-making moment from Soulja Boy, a conversation-starting short film, SNL’s most-watched sketch of 2019, an underdog victory in the ring, and an informational video on why spiders and bees are actually our friends.

Collectively, these 10 videos were watched 305 million times and for around 50 million hours. The channels behind them total more than 110 million subscribers.
